Turning Japanese (Tokyo, Japan)

“Make your passion your profession then work will become play.”

Rancho, from the movie 3 Idiots, struck me with this powerful line. I couldn’t agree more. Being a Creative Writer in the field of Advertising has been my dream and I was blessed to be a part of a company which not only opened countless of opportunities for me, it also reassured me I was in the right industry. In spite of the late nights and stress, as Rancho put it, work felt like play.

How can it not be when the company brings you to Tokyo, Japan?

Aspac-Dentsu Aegis Network, you are awesome! Thank you for this.

Here’s an overview of the 4 solid days of fun, food, and booze we had last September 2015.

DAY 0: MNL – NRT

All our bags are packed and ready to go!

IMG_4388.jpg

IMG_4390.jpg

You just know it’s going to be an awesome trip when the fun starts even before leaving. So first things first: beer before going on the plane!

IMG_4393.jpg

When it was finally time to board, everyone got excited.

But a certain someone was extra excited.

Rolly.

IMG_4397.jpg

Because it was his first overseas trip! 🙂

IMG_4399.jpg

We took a redeye flight and had a layover in Hong Kong.

DAY 1: Dentsu Tokyo

A whole day of traveling, waiting,

IMG_4421.jpg
with my Senior Art Director partner Sandra

and not bathing (haha)

IMG_4420.jpg
Rolly and Pao

we went to our first stop in Japan.

IMG_4434.jpg

Dentsu Tokyo, Aspac’s regional and global office, houses thousands of ad men. WOW.

IMG_4427.jpg
City view from inside Dentsu’s office

After the day’s session, we went on to explore the city of Tokyo.

Here’s a glimpse of how our first day was.

DAY 1: Akihabara

Widely known as the electric town or for some, the anime paradise, Akihabara welcomed us all with everything colourful and quirky.

IMG_4466.jpg

IMG_4470.jpg

The streets and buildings are full of character!

IMG_4472.jpg

IMG_4496.jpg

It was impossible not to play tourist

IMG_4517.jpg

IMG_4537.jpg

and take selfies everywhere!

IMG_4546.jpg

After a long day, we finally checked in our hotel at a Disney-themed hotel.

With roommates Jo, Issay, and Sandra

IMG_4572.jpg

After settling down

IMG_4573.jpg

and FINALLY bathing (after more than a day!)

IMG_4574.jpg

we were off to our first day of Disney adventure!

IMG_4588.jpg

DAY 1: Tokyo DisneySea

IMG_4592.jpg

It didn’t matter if everyone was exhausted. We were all hyped up to be at the happiest place on earth.

IMG_4586.jpg
DisneySea gang: Pao, Joey, Jo, Issay, Sandra

Featuring water-related Disney movies and characters, DisneySea is one of the two Disney theme parks in Tokyo; DisneyLand, being the other one. This 176-acre theme park, as it turns out, is the one and ONLY DisneySea across the globe!

IMG_4621.jpg

IMG_4626.jpg

We entered DisneySea with a Starlight Passport, meaning we only had access to the park after 6pm. It turned out to be a great idea ’cause the rides and attractions looked amazing at night!

IMG_4638.jpg

IMG_4639.jpg

We went back to our hotel rooms and continued the party.

Nope, still not tired! Haha.

DAY 2: Tokyo DisneyLand

IMG_4674.jpg

No one is too old for DisneyLand. Pretty much why we were all sooo excited.

IMG_4669.jpg

As it turns out, they were excited to see us too! ❤

I almost cried when Piglet gave me the most heartwarming hug when I asked for a photo with him. :’)

Seeing the castle from afar

IMG_4677.jpg

made us jump for joy!

IMG_4679.jpg
Jo

TOO. EXCITED! AAAAAAAHHHHHH!

IMG_4690.jpg

First on our long list of rides for the day was It’s a Small World.

IMG_4694.jpg

I first rode It’s a Small World 20 years ago. Being there, hearing the iconic tune of the song signalled tears to well up in my eyes. It was too reminiscent of my childhood.

IMG_4699.jpg

The long queue was worth it. 🙂

IMG_4705.jpg

IMG_4708.jpg

And in that few minutes, I felt like I was my 5-year-old self again. ❤

IMG_4713.jpg

Next up:

IMG_4723.jpg

IMG_4727.jpg
Splash Mountain

The aftermath?

IMG_4729.jpg

IMG_4730.jpg

Hahaha!

And of course, when you’re in DisneyLand, you can’t not eat all the Mickey-shaped treats

IMG_4733.jpg

IMG_4756.jpg

and go crazy over the merchandise!

IMG_4675.jpg

It was basically a whole day of getting on as many rides as we could and making the most out of the day we get to be kids again. 🙂

IMG_4745.jpg

IMG_4747.jpg

IMG_4751.jpg

The best part?

We got to see all the characters at the parade! OMGGGGGGG.

IMG_4776.jpg

IMG_4766.jpg

IMG_4769.jpg

It was simply magical.

IMG_4790.jpg

DisneyLand really is the happiest place on earth. :’)

DAY 3: Explore Tokyo

Up and ready to see more of Tokyo!

IMG_4859.jpg
With Sandra, Jo, and Issay

First on the list for the day’s agenda:

Meiji Shrine

IMG_4886.jpg

IMG_4883.jpg
Provenance of the Bourgogne Wine for Consecration
IMG_4876.jpg
Barrels of Sake Wrapped in Straw
IMG_4890.jpg
Ritual Cleansing of the Hands and Mouth

We were able to witness a wedding parade when we were there!

IMG_4899.jpg

IMG_4902.jpg

IMG_4907.jpg

As tradition has it, you write down your wishes, prayers, and words of gratitude on a piece of wood and hang it up the wall.

IMG_4940.jpg

IMG_4926.jpg

IMG_4945.jpg

Next stop:

IMG_5074.jpg

AsakusaIMG_5077.jpg

to explore

IMG_5104.jpg

IMG_5078.jpg

shop

IMG_5084.jpg

and dine

One of our Tokyo finds:

IMG_4960.jpg

And of course, what’s a Tokyo experience without riding the train?

IMG_5121.jpg
With Pabs, Gio, Joey, Sandra, and Monday

Shibuya

At night, we made our way to Shibuya for dinner.

IMG_5133.jpg

IMG_5141.jpg

IMG_5165.jpg

IMG_5161.jpg

and drinks!

IMG_5172.jpg

Litres of booze

IMG_5173.jpg

IMG_5177.jpg

+ scrumptious slices of sashimi

IMG_5202.jpg

+ good company = awesome night out!

IMG_5180.jpg

The night wasn’t over after we left the bar.

In fact, the fun just continued. Hence:

IMG_5203.jpg

Hahaha.

IMG_5206.jpg
With Rolly and Pao

So much love for these two! ❤

IMG_5214.jpg

But Rolly has more love for free hugs than for me and Pao. Hahaha!

As for me,

IMG_5222.jpg

I was simply overwhelmed to finally have a photo with the iconic Hachiko monument.

DAY 4: Eat, shop, eat.

Just like that, we were on our last day of the trip. Jo and I decided to spend the day within Shinjuku to eat, shop, and eat more.

Shinjuku

IMG_5254.jpg

IMG_5259.jpg

IMG_5296.jpg

Just a few blocks away from our hotel was this art paradise:

IMG_5270.jpg

Sekaido is a 6-storey stationary and craft store that has paint, pens, crayons, canvases, paper, wood, frames… EVERYTHING!

Imagine a buffet of art materials! IMG_5368.jpg

My Sekaido purchases:

IMG_5302.jpg

Little Prince merchandise! ❤

IMG_5387.jpg

After going crazy at Sekaido, Jo and I just continued to walk around and met these friendly fellows.

IMG_5340.jpg

IMG_5348.jpg

Also, more sushi!

IMG_5352.jpg

IMG_5356.jpg

IMG_5362.jpg

IMG_5364.jpg

It rained on our last night in Tokyo.

IMG_5396.jpg

IMG_5415.jpg
With Ronan

Nonetheless, we still went out to have our last authentic Japanese dinner.

IMG_5413.jpg

IMG_5414.jpg

Then it was time to head to the airport.

IMG_5422.jpg

And have more beer with my boss before boarding. Hahaha.

IMG_5424.jpg
With Joey

IMG_5431.jpg

For most of us, it was time to fly back to Manila. As for me, I was off to Hong Kong for another solo adventure. (Look out for this post!)

IMG_5429.jpg

It was 4 days of fun, food, and booze.

Arigatou gozaimasu Aspac-DAN for this experience! ❤ 🙂
